SECTION 8 RENTAL ASSISTANCE

 

Washington County provides rent subsidies for families who want to live in a privately owned, market rate unit. The Washington County HRA currently administers about 90 vouchers and 400 portability clients.

The Washington County HRA Public Housing and HCV/Section 8 Voucher Waiting lists are closed.

What is the Section 8 Rent Assistance Program?

Section 8 Rent Assistance is a program designed to help you pay rent in private market rate housing (see service area map).

How do I quality for this program?

To be eligible for assistance, your total household gross annual income must be less than the limits below for January 1, 2014. Currently, Washington County is not accepting application for the Section 8 Program.

What type of unit can I rent?

You can rent any type of rental unit suitable for your family. The unit you choose must pass Section 8 Housing Quality Standards (HQS). You can choose an apartment, house, duplex or townhouse.

HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER TENANT BASED ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

The Washington County HRA payment to the owner is limited by a Payment Standard. If you choose a unit that is higher than the Payment Standard, you could pay more than 30% of your income for rent. However, you cannot pay more than 40% of your income towards the rent.

Can I get assistance where I am living?

If you are living in a city where Washington County HRA services are offered (see service are map) you may be able to stay in your current unit. If you are not living in one of these cities, you may be required to move in order to get Section 8 Rent Assistance.

PROJECT-BASED ASSISTANCE:

A federal program under which Section 8 Vouchers are allocated to a specific rental property and provide for a subsidy to tenants living at that property. Projects are selected following an application process that requires a commitment to construct new buildings or rehabilitate existing ones. Raymie Johnson Estates in Oak Park Heights is an example of a property with project based assistance.
